The drive from Great Falls to Fort Benton on Highway 87 is a pretty one, It also happens to be very short (42 miles) and typically pleasant. And while we highly recommend making the drive to the historic city of Fort Benton, you may want to consider going during daylight hours.

When you’re driving this stretch of Highway 87, you probably won’t see anything suspicious.

According to local legend, a transient Native American spirit is said to dwell in these parts.

So, why should you care if you see a random man on the side of the road, ghost or not? Because apparently, this spirit is a trickster.

Frida / Flickr He has been known to dart out in front of cars, bumping into them. When the terrified driver gets out to survey the damage, he disappears without a trace. And when you get back into your car and check the rearview mirror, you just might see him walking along the side of the road as if nothing has happened.

Apparently, this poor man was hit and killed while he was walking on the side of the road.

Of course, the drive itself is beautiful, and you’ll wind up in the charming historic city of Fort Benton.
