Are you ready for a challenging hike with an unforgettable destination? Here’s a trail in the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge that takes you right up to the top of Eagle Mountain.

The Narrows Trail to Boulder Mountain (a.k.a. Eagle Mountain) is just one mile long, but it’s considered difficult, mostly due to the boulder scrambling you’ll do toward the end of the hike.

You’ll find the trailhead at the parking lot just past Lost Lake in the Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge.

During summer months, make sure you have plenty of water with you - the hike is mostly sun-exposed, and you’ll become dehydrated quickly.

Though the hike is short, plan on about two hours to reach the top, and another hour to get back down. Trekking poles can be helpful, especially when crossing the water along the way.

For part of the hike, you’ll walk through tall grasses (and wildflowers in the late spring/early summer months). Wear long hiking pants instead of shorts to avoid ticks.

This trail isn’t particularly popular, so you’ll likely enjoy some solitude during your hike. Take your time, and enjoy the scenery.

When you get near the top, you’ll scramble over boulders, and this is where it gets tricky.

There’s no actual trail by this point - you’ll just make your way over large boulders to the summit. If you’re afraid of heights, or not capable of scaling these large rocks, then you won’t make it to the top.
