The Wrangell Mountains are to the northwest of the Saint Elias Mountains and northeast of the Chugach Mountains. The range was named after explorer, president of Russian-American Company, and admiral Ferdinand von Wrangel.

The highest peak in the range is Mount St. Elias standing at 18,008 feet. It is the second highest mountain in both Alaska and Canada.

The Wrangell Mountains are almost entirely volcanic in origin, and they include the second and third highest volcanoes in the United States, Mount Blackburn and Mount Sanford.

The Wrangell Volcanic Field spreads over 2,000 square miles is made up of thousands of lava flows and some of the highest peaks in North America, including Mount Wrangell, one of the largest (by volume) active volcanoes in the world.

Mt. Drum is 12,000 feet high and is a stratovolcano just inside the national park and was active between 650,000 and 240,000 years ago.
