Whatever the season, a short hike in nature provides a rejuvenating experience we all need once in a while. Even in the winter, this short hike in the mountains is filled with breathtaking views and an endpoint that leaves you at the foot of one of the tallest waterfalls in The South.
The trail to Mingo Falls could be called, instead, a staircase to Mingo Falls. The short, but steep, jaunt up a steep flight of stairs is quite the workout — at least for a few minutes.

The trail itself is a mere .4 miles and this initial set of steps is the equivalent to climbing 16 stories.

However, even in winter (except in extreme icy and snowy conditions) the trail is still well-traveled, in spite of the initial uphill climb.

From the parking lot, you can start counting stairs… but the views and the scenery may just be enough to distract you.

You’ll find a place to sit and reflect once you reach the top. And from here, the trail is a mix of soil and rocks all the way to the viewing platform…

…which has a few more stairs to conquer, but trust us: it’s worth it!

Mingo Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in the southern Appalachian Mountains. The 120-foot drop over a moss-covered ledge is just the pretty sight you need for a pick-me-up in ANY season.

It’s one of the most popular waterfalls in North Carolina, primarily because it’s so tall and so (relatively) quick and easy to reach. The second best part of this hike?? Going back DOWN the stairs!

Have you included this waterfall staircase hike in your adventures in Western North Carolina yet?
