Summertime is slowly coming to a close here in the south, and that means that our vacation plans are dwindling and disappearing in a haze of bright sunlight, grill smoke and tan lines. If you’re not QUITE down with the heat of a day out and about, though, you just might want to check out the beautiful scenery in Monteagle, Tennessee. This gorgeous little town is one of our favorite places to visit in the whole state, and we couldn’t wait to share it with you.
Bob Henderson - Flickr Monteagle, Tennesse has been long looked over for its well-educated neighbor of Sewanee, but we’re in love with the tiny southern town. Home to a scant 1,200 people, this little space on the Tennessee plateau makes for a beautiful weekend away.
idintify media - Flickr Monteagle is nestled deep into Tennessee’s rampant natural beauty, and can sometimes be ignored because of its remote location. We, however, think that spending the weekend in Monteagle is the perfect way to experience the quiet heart of the American south.
Monteagle History - Facebook The tiny town has a deep, rich natural history in the state - here you can see an undated historic photo of nearby Savage Gulf.
csm242000 - Flickr You’ll want to be careful if you’re driving through during chillier seasons - the mountaintop can get pretty icy, and you want to make sure you’re staying safe!
johnrhopkins You’ll find many a photo of the beautifully treacherous trek up I-24, all the meandering way to the top of the mountain.
Caron VanHook - Flickr Still, there’s no prettier drive in the state. Can you imagine making your way up Monteagle Mountain on the way home from work every day? It looks like something out of a fairy tale.
Caron Von Hook - Flickr You can indulge at High Point Restaurant, where Al Capone once spent his time in the south.
Wendy Harman - Flickr Or you can trek out to the University of the South in Sewanee which is just down the road, and makes for a stunning spot even just to visit. The space oozes with old south decadence and the liturgy remains spot on, so many years later.
Michael Hicks - Flickr Savage Gulf and all of its hiking opportunities is also just a hot second away, which means you can stay in a historic, beautiful town by night and hike Middle Tennessee by day. It’s truly the best of both worlds!
Brent Moore - Flickr Have you been to Monteagle? Would you visit?
Carol VanHook - Flickr You’ll be hard pressed to find a town in the whole of Tennessee that we don’t like, but Monteagle has a special place in our hearts. We’ll see you on the mountain, friends.
You can continue to experience the beauty of our great state with a drive down this amazing backroad with stunning adventure potential.
