There’s a train museum tucked away in the forest, and many Oregonians don’t even know it’s there! The Train Mountain Railroad Museum is located in Chiloquin - a small town just north of Klamath Falls, in the Winema National Forest.

The outdoor museum includes 37 cabooses and more than 64 full-sized rail cars and rolling stock.

Check in at the office and get a map for the self-guided walking tour that takes you past dozens of different train cars. The map gives you information about each, and the tour is available every day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

You’ll see unique maintenance cars, like this Weyerhauser Snow Spreader, which used various plows and wings to remove snow from train tracks during winter months.

This sleeper car went into service on the California Zephyr in 1948. It offered 10 roomettes and 6 bedrooms and could sleep as many as 22 passengers.

This tank car was built in 1939 and has six compartments that each hold 1,000 gallons of wine!

Docents at the museum offer several presentations so you can learn how these trains operated. See a steam engine presentation, learn how switches and signals are used, and find out why cabooses were a vital part of trains in the past.
