With as many wonderful hikes as there are in Minnesota, it might as well be called the Land of 10,000 Trails. That may be a slight exaggeration, but there truly are enough trails to keep you busy every day of the year. If you’re looking for something a bit more unique than your your average jaunt through the forest, consider taking a walk down this tunnel trail in Minnesota. Take a look:
Ely’s Peak is a small, rugged hill in Duluth, Minnesota. A few miles south of downtown Duluth, this little mountain is part of the Superior Hiking Trail.

The hill rises 1,133 feet above the surrounding area. That means it offers incredible views to anyone who hikes it.

The view is particularly beautiful in the fall, when the leaves begin to burn orange and red.

Two short trails lead to the top of the peak. Together, they make up about a mile of hiking.

While the peak is a popular spot for hikers, there’s another place on Ely’s Peak that is well worth visiting: its tunnel.

The old train tunnel was blasted through the rock way back in 1910. Though it’s been decades since a train has chugged through Ely’s Peak, it’s still a popular spot for hikers.

Much of the tunnel is marked with the graffiti of past hikers. It’s an interesting way to catch a little-seen glimpse of what a real train tunnel is like.
