Every year, a unique Christmas parade takes place on the glittering rivers that run through Portland. The Christmas Ship Parade is an incredible experience— with boats decked out in Christmas decorations sail down the Willamette and Columbia rivers, lighting up the night. The event takes place on numerous dates throughout December, and the sight is simply magical.

This wonderful tradition began in 1954, with one single decorated sailboat gliding down the river. In the years following, more and more ships began to partake, and the parade became more dazzling as the years went by.

You can bundle up and watch from the waterfront, make reservations at a riverside restaurant, or even book a hotel room overlooking the water. A few fun viewing options are dining at Salty’s On The Columbia, taking a cruise on the Portland Spirit, and booking a ride on the Willamette Shore Trolley’s Christmas Ships excursion.
