Many Delawareans head to the beach in the summer, and the beach town of Lewes is a top destination. However, too many Delawareans just lay out on the sand along the Point and play in the water without fully exploring Cape Henlopen State Park and all it has to offer. If you’re heading over to the Cape this spring or summer, take a day to hike in the park and you’ll be amazed at what you may find.

On this 2.6 mile trail, you’ll walk through wooded forests, salt marshes and you’ll climb the Great Dune.

Spring is the best time to hike the Walking Dunes Trail, because the beautiful Pink Lady’s Slipper and Beach Heather are in bloom and the bugs haven’t come out in full force! If you choose to try this hike in the summer, you’ll have the benefit for being able to cool off in water, but you’ll want to bring bug spray and keep an eye out for poison ivy, which grows in some spots along the trail.
