With much of the state already in peak fall foliage season, it’s easy to remember why Maine is so great in the fall. Colors on all the trees, a crisp breeze in the air and (of course!) awesome apple cider donuts are just a few of the reasons why we love it here this time of year. To really soak up all the state has to offer, hop in the car and take this beautiful fall foliage drive in Maine through some of the most impressive changing colors. This beautiful drive ultimately leads you to Baxter State Park in Millinocket, but the journey there is also surprisingly beautiful.

You’ll start on I-95 heading towards Medway. Before you wonder why we’re suggesting you take a scenic drive on a major Interstate, remember that this roadway is an entirely different animal once you begin heading north in Maine.

One of your first stops will be the scenic overlook just southeast of Katahdin, off of I-95 in Medway. It’s a stunning view for being on a major roadway!

Once you get to the Medway area, you’ll get off at Exit 244.

Head left once exiting I-95 and follow the easily seen signs directing you towards Baxter State Park.

Once you arrive, you’ll find the gatehouse.

Head towards the right to begin the journey to Roaring Brook, a great destination if you want the journey to be the best part.

Once you arrive at Roaring Brook, you’ll turn around to head back to the start eventually making a left at the gatehouse to reach Katahdin Stream.

The drive from Medway into the park and back out should be around 2 hours. Once you’ve done it you can choose to continue an exploration of Baxter State Park or you can head into town for some eats. Whatever you choose to do, remember to appreciate all that Maine has to offer. This season will soon come to an end which means winter is on its way.

But, let’s just forget that part for now.
