Abandoned or closed psychiatric hospitals are already pretty eerie. Here in the Show Me State, one such facility in St. Joseph has been turned into a museum to preserve the history of this state asylum. Visitors can tour the facilities by day and learn about the treatments used on patients throughout the last century. However, would you be brave enough to stay overnight? Take this opportunity for an overnight ghost hunt of the Glore Psychiatric Museum if you dare!
The State Lunatic Asylum No. 2 opened its doors in 1874 and was renamed St. Joseph State Hospital in 1899. Initially only 25 patients were admitted here but it housed 3,000 patients by the 1950s.

Inside the museum you can get a glimpse of what life was like for the patients here. The letters in the TV are actual letters a patient hid inside the back of an old television set. To this day, no one knows if he was storing them there for safe keeping or if he thought his messages were being delivered.

The museum documents the advances that have been made in the field of psychiatry. Many treatments from the past seem simply barbaric today.

Some areas of the museum seem simply eerie. It’s as though you can feel the sorrows that patients left behind.

Sadly, some patients never left Glore. Today, many people believe that Glore is haunted by its former residents.
