As the weather warms up, it’s time to think about how to enjoy the great outdoors of Maine. While many people will head to places like Acadia National Park or The Kennebunks, we love hopping on a local ferry to one of of the many offshore islands that dot the state’s craggy coastline. There are many popular ones from which to choose, but we recommend you head straight for this less-visited island sitting just a short ride from Portland.
Head slightly north from Peaks Island and you’ll find another beautiful Casco Bay island: Great Diamond Island.

Despite being easily accessed by a 20-25 minute ferry ride from Portland, Great Diamond is often overshadowed by its better-known neighbor.

But, there’s no denying that Great Diamond is just as worthy of a visit if you love Maine scenery and just a bit more quiet.
