There are plenty of hikes in New Hampshire. Some challenging, some easy and lots of routes that are somewhere in the middle. Depending on what your motivation is, you might find yourself face-to-face with incredible views over the white mountains or enveloped by wildflowers and ancient forests. If your favorite thing about exploring New Hampshire is the history, you’ll want to experience this hike in the southwest area of the state.

The story of Madame Sherri’s Castle is as mysterious as it is heartbreaking.

The “castle” was the former entertaining home of Madame Sherri, who was originally named Antoinette Bramare.

glass_house / Flickr She changed her name after marrying and moving to New York, which is where she worked creating Broadway costumes. Nobody knows exactly why she changed her name, nor do we know much about her life.

When her husband passed away, she moved to Chesterfield where she lived in one home, building a three-story “castle” nearby to use for entertaining her New York theater guests.

This hike will lead you through the woods to her home, where the stone remains of the home exist after a 1962 fire.

The hike begins like many hikes in New Hampshire — through the woods, along a beautiful trail. You’ll soon see the remains peak through the trees.

The most prominent section of the home is the grand staircase made of stone.
