Roots are important. Where we came from has a way of steering where we’re headed. North Carolina has more than a few historic landmarks to be proud of, and the oldest grocery store in the state is certainly one of them.
From 1890 on, Thompson’s Store in Saluda has been the heart of the community.

Although some upgrades have been made throughout the years, stepping into Thompson’s is like stepping into a bygone era. The bead-board ceiling is an obvious reminder.
Another remarkable fact about Thompson’s Store is that it’s still operated by the same family.
Thompson’s Store
Google Maps/Will Thomas The current Thompsons aren’t even direct descendants of the original Thompsons (one is the widow of the third generation; the other is a cousin) but that doesn’t matter as much as keeping the store in the family and continuing the tradition of North Carolina’s Oldest Grocery Store.
In the 1950s, Thompson’s added a restaurant next door. Ward’s Grill is as much of a staple on Main Street as is the old grocery store.
