Utah’s Ice Castles got its start in Brent Christensen’s front yard. He built an ice castle to entertain his kids, and soon kids from all over the neighborhood were showing up.

This year, the joy of Ice Castles has spread to six locations all over North America.

Ice Castles isn’t open yet - the weather needs to be consistently cold enough that they won’t melt! But don’t worry - crews are waiting and working on the castles whenever they can.

When completed, each castle weighs more than 20 million pounds, and consists of thousands of icicles. In fact, 12,000 icicles are grown every day.

You’ll want to make sure to wear a good pair of snow boots, too. The floor of the castles are made of crushed ice, so they can be a little slippery, and very cold.
