If you’ve been in North Dakota for the past few weeks, you’ve probably noticed the sky has been unusually dull and hazy. Wildfires from the north and west of the state have turned the prairie skies into a smoky blur – and it is said that it may get worse. Check out these photos that show just how strange it’s been:

This hazy landscape captured in North Dakota isn’t being caused by dust or fog, but smoke traveling hundreds of miles from wildfires north and west of the state.

Huge blazes in places like the west coast, Idaho, Montana, and Canada have been burning for weeks and most are barely contained.

These wildfires cover thousands of acres and are spreading smoke far and wide, and North Dakota has been seeing quite a bit of it.

Recently, air quality alerts were issued in North Dakota due to ash and soot particles in the air from these fires. It is suggested that those with respiratory conditions keep their time outside at a minimum to avoid irritation.

You may continue to see these dark skies for quite a while as the fires continue burning, though shifts in the wind currents and atmospheric pressure may make it lessen or worsen over time.
